Post-workout protein shake: Golden milk made with brazil nuts

I love using our Golden Milk drink mix to make an anti-inflammatory (thanks to the turmeric and black pepper), delicious protein shake after my workouts. Rather than use expensive nut milks, I prefer to blend 10g of whole nuts into my protein shakes to vary the nuts in my diet (which in turn varies the nutrients I get). I keep all kinds of raw nuts on hand at home and soak a few every night before bed so they can be used in shakes and porridges the next day.

Japanese Protein Oat Porridge

I love mixing up my morning protein oats by using random stuff from my house. In this recipe I shared on our Instagram stories, I made protein oats inspired by Japanese miso soup.

It’s super nourishing thanks to the bone broth, moshio seaweed salt, and foraged chanterelle mushrooms.

It’s fast to make in the morning (it took me literally 5 minutes) but you’ll need to do some prep the night before (soak your oats and sous vide your eggs).

When I founded Methodology, it was literally the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I don’t think Stephen or I took a single day off during the first nine months. I’d liquidated my entire retirement savings to invest it into the business and to live off it since we couldn’t afford to pay me. The business was so hard on me physically, mentally, and emotionally that even my boyfriend (now my ex lol) at the time said something like, “Maybe you should figure out a limit on how much time and money you’re willing to put into this so you know when to quit.”

But I’d never actually seriously thought about quitting. Sure, there were days when I thought, “I effing hate my job” but in my mind, I wasn’t going to stop until my vision came to life. I kept going no matter what crazy shenanigans happened because my “Why” for suffering was super clear to me: I wanted so badly for everyone to know how much eating the right food could positively impact their health, energy, and life the same way it had impacted mine. And here I am, still running this company with Stephen 4 years later.

This is why today, while New Year’s resolutions are fresh on our minds, I want to emphasize how important it is for you to figure out Why you want to achieve your New Year’s resolutions or whatever goals are on your mind. Because one thing I learned from my experience with Methodology is that building systems and working hard isn’t enough to ensure success. There will for sure come times -- repeated times -- when things are so damn hard that all you want to do is quit. And unless you’re clear on your Why, you probably won’t be able to overcome these moments.

This is why your Why is so important. Because if your Why is powerful enough, then it’ll pull you through all the times you can’t find the strength or willpower to keep going.

And once you’ve  figure out your Why for your goals, you still need systems on top of that to help you succeed.

Vietnamese Morning Glory Salad

This is a super simple Vietnamese salad recipe from my dad that I grew up eating. The most labor-intensive part is shredding the Morning Glory, but it’s also kind of fun. Hope you like it!

Ingredients

1 cup sushi seasoning (available at Asian grocery markets)

1 cup coco rico soda (available at Asian grocery markets)

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

splash of balsamic vinegar

2 bunches of Morning Glory (available at Asian grocery markets)

1 bunch of cilantro

1 bunch of Thai basil (available at Asian grocery markets)

1 white onion

black pepper

1 lime

Directions

  1. Make the salad dressing first. In a bowl, add 1 cup of coco rico soda, 1 cup of sushi seasoning, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and a splash of balsamic vinegar. Set the dressing aside.

  2. Next, cut the stems off the Morning Glory and use a Morning Glory cutter like this one (also available at Asian grocery stores) to cut each Morning Glory stem into ribbons. Use scissors to cut the Morning Glory into little golf-ball sized bundles so that it’ll be easier to eat with your fork or chopsticks. Keep the ribbons in a bowl of cold water so that they stay fresh. If you can’t finish your Morning Glory, store it refrigerated in the same bowl of cold water, fully immersed.

  3. Chop the cilantro and set it aside.

  4. Chop the onion and set it aside.

  5. Chop the Thai basil and set it aside.

  6. Assemble the salad. In a bowl, combine the Morning Glory ribbons, cilantro, onion, and Thai Basil. Add dressing to taste and mix. Squeeze lime juice to taste. Add black pepper to taste.

  7. Optional: add your favorite protein and mix. I like beef sauteed with soy sauce, garlic, and onion or poached chicken.
